The winners of the 2018 Nationwide Geographic Journey Photographer of the Yr contest have been introduced, with Japanese photographer Reiko Takahashi taking the distinguished grand prize.
Takahashi gained the $10,000 prize after her photograph of a humpback whale calf, titled Mermaid, was chosen by a panel of Nationwide Geographic judges from greater than 13,000 entries. The picture was taken off the coast of Japan’s Kumejima Island.
Takahashi left her long-time workplace job to pursue her ardour for underwater images, and traveled to Kumejima Island to humpback whales with their calves.
